Countering Deforestation

Deforestation is a pertinent issue that has great negative impact on the natural environment of the world. Many lands have been wiped clear of their natural vegetation. From the simple science that we learned in primary school, good vegetation plays a cardinal role in the availability of good rains.

It is therefore, imperative for communities to understand that there is need to end or slow down the rate at which these forests are being wiped out.

It is worth noting that most of the poor rural dwellers’ survival revolves round the forests. They use firewood as an affordable energy source, they clear land for cultivation, this in itself is not bad except they need to be educated on how best to carry out these activities.

Importance of gaining knowledge on deforestation

They say knowledge is power, and the essence for this article is to let readers understand the role forests play in the natural environment.

People ought to understand that forests exist for the sole purpose of supporting human, animal and marine life for continued existence.

However human activities have continued to destroy these natural habitats for animals and marine life. There are so many reported human animal conflicts as modern day developments are taking up space meant for animals by bringing down forests.

It is my belief that when adequate information in made available to people, the forests shall be preserved by way of integrating development while maintaining the forests.

Time for the information to reach the audience

Everyone should be participating in ensuring as many people are aware of the happening in their environment. Developers and farmers especially, must be in the forefront in sensitizing masses on the importance of looking after the forests. Environmentalists should have an upper hand in packaging right information as they are experts in these matters. The time to act is now, let us all play a part in preserving the forests in order to secure a future for generations to come after we are all long gone.

It might look as though it is too late to act, the answer is no, we can not let past mistakes hamper any effort to act good today. We only need to learn from these mistakes and come up with solutions that provides a win-win situation. It is an undeniable fact that technology is advancing every day, which has made is possible for any imaginable activity to be undertaken, hence natural lands have been the target.

Some better methods to counter deforestation

  • Producing charcoal briquettes to use in household cooking and heating. This simple technology does not necessarily use grown trees, but instead there are various types of vegetation used such as; husks,
leaves, grass, left over vegetables, wood shavings and others. This entails that many trees will be saved from being cut down resulting in preserved forests for the benefit of future generations.
  • Using organic manure in crop cultivation as this is good for the soil as compared to chemical fertilizers that destroy soils in the long run. Furthermore, organically produced food is good for the human consumption
that lessens diseases that may crop up due to long term accumulation of chemical residues.
  • Total avoidance of bush burning, this also contributes to soil erosion and the eventual gully formations and poor vegetation growth as most fertile top soil would have been washed away, instead the dried up leaves could apply for charcoal briquettes making like indicated in the first bullet above.
  • Embracing conservation kind of farming that makes use of the scarce resources which promotes high yields. The system uses less chemical fertilizers, crops can survive longer periods of dry spells in an event that there is
    not enough rain fall.
  • Tree replanting should also be taught to people so as impart the knowledge of continuous planting trees and
preserving forests. Infertile fields can be used as space for replanting activities.
  • Deliberate programs should be promoted in order to create a resource base that can be accessed by anyone at all times. The resource center would provide well researched information that show proven evidence that indeed forests have been destroyed over time and are still being destroyed if nothing tangible is done to stop the vice. This is possible also by driving the point that there is still hope and  a way to remedy this state of affairs is within reach.

What are the benefits of reforestation

  • Forests support human, animal and marine life. The cycle then enhances the co existence of various humans and creatures of the wild. Needless to say every creatures plays an important role the Eco system hence the reason as to why we should all take an active role in ensuring that a balance is reached.
  • Development will be shared among the dwellers of these places that would be earmarked for reforestation by provision of jobs which in turn will have a multiplier effect.
  • Local soils and rainfall partens would be improved and in turn families will be able to cultivate their land with increased yields to support their families selling surplus to urban folks for that extra income needed to meet other financial obligations.
  • Local authorities will widen their revenue base as a result of increased reforestation activities through levies and in turn local social amenities will be improved.

Reforestation is not a program for selected individuals, it calls for concerted efforts from all spheres of society since its adverse effects cuts across all persons. It is better to start investing in this program now rather than later if the goal of reforestation is to be achieved.

We owe the future generations a service to leave them an environment in which both economic activities and conservation shall continue to thrive. Like stated above this must be a win-win situation if all decide to take part in any form whether directly or indirectly.

One of the easiest way to contribute positively in this process, is never to cut trees indiscriminately in the name of development.

My personal fears

I have always felt I have potential to achieve great things in life, but that monster inside of me has always kept discouraging me. I tried to do some introspection to really find the answer to my inability to initiate something and let it grow into the dreams I usually relish within my inner self.

It has taken so many years for me to draw a conclusion, meanwhile during the many years of inner wars, I have tried
this and that and everything has died out despite having all the possible signs of succeeding.

What do I do wrong? Yes what do I do wrong that I end up killing those beautiful ideas, I see myself in a
distant future as an accomplished CEO, the only hindrance there is, is me.

The scenario.

I once came up with an idea of making charcoal from old used newspapers. By the way I am one person who reads a lot I read anything I come across, this habit dates back to the time I was a little girl, I used to enjoy the
errands of going to the market for the simple reason of having access to that newspaper cutting used as a wrapper for the bought merchandise. I grew up and the love for reading has never left me. As a result of this habit, of course as a grown up person, I ended up with a collection of newspapers piled up in sacks.

I had read and kept the papers, I never wanted to throw them away and felt they could still be useful. How? Your guess is as good as mine, maybe I could take them to the market for trader in need of wrapping papers as smaller amount would be ideal, I thought to my self, there were enough supplies I can boast. What then? I throw them away? No ways, I told and convinced myself that there could be some other possible way to re-use these old

The Brilliant Idea

Then a rather weird idea of making charcoal out of the old newspaper hit my mind. I was so excited about this breakthrough; I didn’t care how the process would be either simple or complicated, the most important thing was that I had finally found the use for my old newspapers. I am a genius am I not……

Some research I did on the possibilities of making charcoal out of newspapers were positive, and there I was, it was possible and there were different ways of doing it. It was discovered that there were other materials apart from newspapers that could be used to make charcoal without cutting down tree as it were and common among many

The discovery was so enriching as it opened my single file focus on newspapers, I learnt that the following items were options for charcoal making. Rice husks, wood shavings, saw dust, maize husks, ordinary leaves, grass and the charcoal dust.

I set out to try to put into practice my new discovery, i did a demo on the newspapers and I got some really amazing results. This was done with my bare hands and I know there was a better way of doing it especially if it had to be done on a large scale. In no time I discovered there were actually simple to complex machinery that could be used in making charcoal pellets from the above named seemingly waste materials.

The moment the issue of sourcing for a machine crept in, the excitement dwindled and as usual the fantasy that was birthed with great excitement just went mute and the next stop was a trash bin, the bin that contained many ideas that were lacking action by the idea initiator and that is myself to be precise. What do you think caused the once so brilliant idea seem impossible? Refer to the topic of this write up.

It is what I have described in the above practical example that hinders most of us from achieving that which was once an exciting idea. We give up so easily and let our inner fears take the best of us. We focus mostly on the “what if it fails” without giving chance to “what if it succeeds” kind of thoughts.

I call this negative thought a DREAM KILLER. Apart from the dream killer, we also have a tendency of worrying about other people’s reaction to our innovations. We consult people that have no ambitions of their own, what advice can one get from such individuals if not the usual negative vibe.

Why the inaction is wrong

The above incident happened somewhere in a small town I was residing in the year 2013, I know some of you that
are reading this may try to defend me by saying that maybe I didn’t have the money needed to get that particular machinery from China, yes you maybe right, but is that reason enough to let go of such a brilliant idea
completely? The answer is a big NO.

Charcoal making really was making all the economic sense and I was seeing my branded charcoal pellets products on the market, on the shelves of leading supermarkets, local stalls, kiosks and ordinary market place. This in turn was going to create employment to some local youths, whilst doing away with the ordinary way of producing ordinary charcoal by cutting trees that leads to depleted forests.

My target is that person that is fond of putting off ideas to stop it now and make a move. It might not be a clear idea, I can assure you that the future will take care of the polishing but getting started is crucial. I also will not promise you that it would be rosy, it gets bumpy but it is always worthwhile. This one is a real life experience I thought of sharing it with anyone that may still be procrastinating on what they want to do. The world’s population is so huge that any niche has its own audience.

7 Things I learned from my former boss

He never told me that I was good

When I started out in my career just after I acquired my college certificate, I was super excited and motivated to succeed. But my new boss signaled that I needed to slow down and focus on the job that was right in front of me. It dawned on me that I was in a wrong place, while it is important to keep your head down and work hard, it is also important to dream big and keep your future aspirations live at all times. I convinced myself that I would not let my boss put me in some kind of a box.

The zeal to want to succeed helped me to keep that motivation and stay inspired. I knew I was good nut his management style was never to show it to me although I knew that he appreciated having me around. This is what kept me motivated as I put in my best at all times. He never entertained excuses for failure to perform, which meant that I had to figure out the best way to deliver of course whilst maintaining high professionalism.   .

I was young and timid

When I joined this particular company, I was in my early twenties and knew literally nothing about this industry. Most of the employees I found were senior in age to me and they were also more experienced than I was.

Little did I know that my then boss had in one of the staff meetings, challenged his staff that he would get a new staff that knew nothing about that particular industry, according to him, this was meant to improve efficiency and counter what he termed as moonlighting at the place of work. True to his word, I was that employee, I was a bet though I didn’t know for a long time, and it didn’t matter whatsoever. My boss knew everything about the company and was really good at his game though he was very elusive in his management style. He would make me feel worthless at times but still maintained that I was in charge of my tasks.

Being a novice that I was, helped me to acclimatize quickly and in no time I was on top things, thanks to the indirect support he provided me with. In short, I was made manager at an early age.

Network always

I cannot claim to have had both the skills and knowledge to run this organization, but I relied much on the people I found and they proved to be a great recourse. I played simple just by seeking their input in any situation that would arise, I would also seek their approval before a final decision would be reached. It is cardinal to know that when you are working, it’s important to get to know your co-workers, as well as meet other peers outside of your company. I started observing the type of people he was associating with and I discovered that most of them where successful business executives. Networking opens up many opportunities and I got myself a mentor and made connections as much as possible. Because of him, I learned how important it was to network.

You can never be too prepared

I have always been a to-do list maker, but my boss taught me how important it was to be prepared for every part of my job. I just needed to be ready for at all times. From meetings to reports and everything in between, I learned what it meant to be ever prepared and how it could really help you stand out among the crowd. From then on, I made sure to go above and beyond with everything I did at work, and I think it helped me grow and succeed in my career. My boss never entertained excuses from any of his employee and this virtual inculcated a sense of responsibility in me for I had to learn to take blame even when I was not at fault.

Follow your heart

During my tenure at this company, I developed a thick skin all thanks to my boss who was as mean as most of the bosses around. He made it a point to manipulate worker’s enumerations over any slight error, if an employee took ill and stayed away from work, they would never get their salary in full. This meant that each day counted and the payroll was only prepared on the second day of the preceding month. I kept a staff register with markings for the whole month and it was on this basis that a payroll was prepared. Now, I have always been on the innovative side of things, so working for someone who had a more technical eye was a great experience. It was a great job and team, and I learned a lot, but it wasn’t the right fit for me. Ultimately, I started preparing to move out and follow my heart by joining another company that was more into my passion. My heart wasn’t in my current job at the time, but it was in this new company. I gave my one day notice, and my boss really didn’t expect me to leave as I was a very dedicated and loyal employee. Though our parting was rather bumpy, I realised my boss appreciated my contribution to the company. He made me realize how important it really is to what is expected of you.

Don’t be afraid to give your boss feedback

When you are working under your boss, their primary role is to manage subordinates, and help you learn and grow. However, it is also important to make suggestions to your boss. My boss would deliberately suggest things that never made sense just to test if I would not question his decisions, luckily for me, I had come to understand his way of doing things, so this scenario was easy for me to handle. I would without fear propose a better way of doing things and he would gladly accept and signal a go ahead. That feeling of getting approval from your boss is awesome if not a greater motivator. Don’t be afraid to give your boss feedback. A good manager will take it and apply it, it would also help in building your self-confidence as an employee.

Try to be creative by trying out things you have never done before

He is geared to study something new everyday

I worked in a service provision industry that was highly competitive as there were many similar businesses entering the market. My boss had a knack for quality and class, this made our company stand out from the rest. He never entertained complacency as a result I was made to make use of my creativity in order to improve on the content, services had to be delivered in uniquely and cost effective way while maintain high quality. Only a little creativity was needed to achieve this.  My manager had a lot of great experience and I was looking forward to learning a lot of him. However, so much of what I was doing was stuff I had never done before. I was nervous and out of my comfort zone. He reminded me constantly that it was okay to try out new things and that it was important to continue trying my best.
